Introduce yourself and your music:
We’re The Peryls, we’re from Crystal Palace and we’ve been recording and gigging together for about six years. We’ve got lots and lots of instruments but we can only play one each live. Recording however, is a totally different story.

How would you describe your sound and lyric style?
Our sound…well it’s evolved over the years but it’s probably something like ‘dark melodic indie pop’ We started off as a three piece but grew a member per year, so everyone brings something to the mix.
Lyrics are really important to us. A lot of people don’t really listen to lyrics (honestly, lots of people say that!) but to us they’re a huge part of what we like to do. We like songs to be about something and ideally about several things, depending on the mood you’re in when you listen. A good lyric can really speak to you, but it can also make you think ‘damn, I wish I’d written that’.

Who are your main influences? What else inspires you?
Our influences are just about everything and not just music. We like a lot of film music and a lot of the time our songs are built around visual references. We’re quite old fashioned in that we all insist on listening to music with the packaging in our hands so we like to put a lot of thought into the artwork. That and the music are two halves of the same thing really.
Musical influences though… Bowie, The Beatles, Supergrass, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Kate Bush… millions of them.

What are you working on now?
Right now we’re working on getting our new record. We’ve spent the last two years making it. It’s been a lot of fun but a lot of work too, so we’re keen to get out and about and play the tunes.

What can people expect at your live gigs?
Depends on the gig! We put on our own ‘Extraordinarium’ shows with music, theatre, interactive weirdness, fireworks and elephants. Not sure when the next one will be, but we’ll keep you posted. Whatever the gig people can expect some nice tunes with deceptively morbid lyrics. We may be smiling but we’re really the eyes that watch you at night.

Where can people check out your music?
Our new record is available to download on iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp, all that sort of thing and the CD is available from our web store at www.theperyls.com. Our first album and three EPs are also there for free!
