Introduce yourselves- where are you from and who plays what?
We are Mary Kelly from Basingstoke: Simon Gibbins (vocals), Matt Spencer (guitar), Dan ‘Breeze’ Ambrose (guitar), Sean Gisby (bass) and Martin Sylvester (drums)
Describe your sound and lyric style
We are essentially a hardcore punk band although we’ve dubbed ourselves as grunge-core. This is because we’ve taken the real heavy riffs that tend to be married to hardcore these days and replaced them with a real harsh, grungy guitar sound. We still provide the breakdowns that offer the opportunity to mosh but at the same time, more defined melodies to get you dancing. This is all brought together by our guttural and offensive vocals (usually screaming about past experiences in our hometown Basingstoke or trying to get into the mind of various serial killers)!
Who are your main influences? What else inspires you?
Our main influences are Send More Paramedics, AFI, Nirvana, Comeback Kid, the Used and Blink 182 to name a very few. Although the music we make is by no means close to sounding like any of these bands.
Other things that inspire us are the fact that we don’t really get along or communicate well within the band. So there’s always an element of hatred in what we individually bring to Mary Kelly and a constant need to do things that we know the other members will hate. Alcohol is nice and having fun is key.
What are you working on now?
At the moment we are just about to record the final couple of tracks to our debut album with is set for release in the later part of 2013.
Are you touring now? When/where?
We currently aren’t touring although we are constantly playing shows in and around Hampshire. We would love to tour and are very hopeful that a tour will come off the back of the forthcoming album.
What can people expect at your live gigs?
At our live shows you can expect a set that we put 100% of ourselves into, every time. You will see nudity, we often dress up and we definitely don’t take ourselves too seriously. We love playing live and we try to make it as enjoyable for our audience as it for us.
Where can people check out your music?
We’ve got a bandcamp, where people can stream the music and if they want to be nice and support us, download some stuff and buy our merch!
