Introduce yourselves – where are you from and who plays what?
Hello! We are The Material from Los Angeles, CA. Our band has a pretty straight-forward, rock set up: I sing, Jon and Roi swap guitar riffs, Jordan drives the bass, and Kevin shreds on drums.

How would you describe your sound and style?
The Material sounds like heart-pounding rock accompanied by radio-ready choruses, all complimented by unapologetic honesty. The songs are moody, relatable, raw, and powerfully compelling.

You’ll be heading along to SXSW 2013 – what are you looking forward to most?
We’re looking forward to the experience in general. This will be our third trip to SXSW and so far each trip has been memorable and successful in it’s own way. Mostly, we’re looking forward to playing songs off our new album because we feel like we finally captured the best representation of what we are.

What are you hoping to take away from attending this year?
Inspiration. SXSW is a creativity hub and with so many bands and artists bringing their own unique voices to the melting pot, it’s almost impossible not to be influenced in some way. We want to harness that influence and use it to inspire us to grow in our own creativity as artists. Also, we just want to take away memories. The best part about being in a touring band is creating memories with your friends that will remain with you forever.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received [or given] to “take on” SXSW?
Work hard and play hard. If you’re traveling out to SXSW, the last thing you want to do is return home and think, “Dang, we should’ve done…” It’s a time to work hard to promote your band and to get exposure for your music. It’s also a time to play hard. The parties are definitely one of the best parts of SXSW and you can easily create life-lasting memories (assuming your don’t totally drown them in endless amounts of free beer) with friends and other bands. It’s a great bonding experience.

Are there any other bands you are looking forward to seeing?
We are looking forward to seeing our  good friends in The Goodnight, Silver Snakes, I The Mighty, Shiny Toy Guns and all our friends from around the country!  SXSW is like a big band family reunion for us.

Where can people catch your sets at SXSW?
We will be playing the Big Picture Media showcase 3/14 on the Rooftop of the Blind Pig at 4pm, and again that night for the Red Gorilla Festival at the Thirsty Nickel at 10pm!

Alternatively, for those not attending this year – where can our readers check out your music?
iTunes is the easiest spot to preview and download all of our music. Here’s the link: itunes.com/thematerial The next best place is at a show. As music lovers we have to place a lot of importance on live shows. There’s no better place to experience our music than in the setting in which it was created – a live setting.
