Introduce yourselves – where are you from and who plays what?
We are Alabaster with Shaina Rae on lead vocals, Kate on lead guitar, Joe on Rhythm guitar <- the 3 of us are from Chicago, then we have Marlon on bass guitar, and Dwayne on Drums. Marlon grew up in the So Cal area, and Dwayne is a Washingtonian to the bone!
How would you describe your sound and style?
Considering we all come from different backgrounds and love all different styles of music from hard core punk bands like Pennywise, and Rise Against, all the way over to the likes of Tegan & Sara, Elliot Smith, and 80’s butt rock. So, I guess we sound just like that.
In the past this “sound” has been described as, “indie melodic pop punk colliding with alternative rock”. We keep our heavy guitars and drums loud, infusing our music with tons of melodies, harmonies, and lyrics that come from a place of truth. We tell raw stories of our own struggles, and how we overcame them together as a band, whether it be addiction, depression, or the mended relationships that fall into turmoil or forgiveness throughout life’s trials and trepidations.
You’ll be heading along to SXSW 2013 – what are you looking forward to most?
We’re stoked to meet some new people, see some new bands, make new friends, and hopefully find a booking manager that wants to work with this road hungry band!
What are you hoping to take away from attending this year?
We’re excited to see what Austin thinks of Alabaster as it will be our first time down in TX. We would like to take away a lot of new contacts in the business that can help keep this freight train moving forward.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received [or given] to “take on” SXSW?
Play as much as possible. So we’re doing just that. I believe on Thursday we are playing 3 showcases that day alone and couldn’t be happier. We shall be exhausted but hell, it sure is going to be a blast!
Are there any other bands you are looking forward to seeing?
We’re looking forward to watching a lot of bands rocking Big Picture Media Rooftop Rodeo on Thursday including Via Coma, The Material, The Hollows, and then later that night at the Heart of Texas Rock Fest our Seattle peeps, Furniture Girls. I think we’re all excited to find that diamond in the rough… that band we will stumble upon at like 2 am… wandering around aimlessly, and that’s the band that will just blow our minds… [laughs]
