Lurch & Chief

As 2012 is drawing to a close, there’s no better time to start looking at what bands are set to make a mark in the New Year. Six piece, Lurch & Chief are without doubt, one to keep an eye on. Having built a steady reputation around the local scene for being a “must see band”, my interest was already growing in what these guys could offer – and certainly, they did not disappoint.

‘I’ll Meet You On Planet Z‘ grabs your attention from the get-go, with its dirty blues/rock sound that makes you think you’ve stumbled upon a long-lost Dead Weather track. The distorted vocals of Hayden Somerville and Lili Hall draw you into the fuzzy, whirring vibes – and are beautifully complemented by the ensuing melodies. The simplicity of the lyrics and the rhythm of the track are downright infectious – warranting several repeat plays through your speakers.

While only a taste of what is to come, there is no denying how interesting [and indeed, talented] Lurch & Chief are. Their command of style and sound is commendable, providing a clear indication of what the future can hold. With the New Year just around the corner, 2013 is already looking like a big one for the Melbourne natives.
