THE AUSSIE BBQ LONDON
Sunday 13th May 2012
83 Rivington Street, Shoreditch, LONDON
1pm – 11pm
Advance tickets £10 or £12 at the door (if available)
The Aussie BBQ returns for the third consecutive year at London’s Cargo in Shoreditch. A great day of live music featuring great emerging talent (many in the country at the invitation of the Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City music conferences)
The Aussie BBQ is the biggest showcase of Australian talent outside of Australia. It started from humble beginnings when two music fans from Melbourne decided to throw a small Australian style BBQ and showcase at the 2003 South By South West (SxSW) music conference in Austin TX. Since then the Aussie BBQ has showcased over 250 Australian acts in 5 countries around the world. This year, 2012 the Aussie BBQ celebrates its tenth anniversary.
The success of the showcase across the USA during SxSW (South By South West) in March and CMJ (College Music Journal) in October led to introduction of the UK Aussie BBQ tour to coincide with the Great Escape and Liverpool Sound City conferences in May. Since 2009 the Aussie BBQ London has fit in between; taking place on the Sunday immediately after the Great Escape and a few days before Liverpool Sound City commences.
The Aussie BBQ London has featured acts such as the Jezabels, DZ Deathrays, Little Red, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Seekae over the last couple of years. The 2012 line up reflects the current Australia music scene with so many great emerging new talents. The Aussie BBQ introduces quality Australian music to the world.
Save yourself a flight to Australia and come down to Cargo and check out some fine music at the Aussie BBQ London.
The 2012 line up (alphabetically) is:
BEN SALTER (GIN CLUB)
HUSKY (just signed to Sub Pop)
KELLIE LLOYD (SCREAMFEEDER)

BEN SALTER is a musician and esteemed songwriter from Brisbane. Anyone with even a passing interest in the Australian music scene over the past decade should be aware of the work of Ben Salter, although which of his diverse array of musical projects they will have encountered is another matter entirely. He plays rock music with his group Giants of Science, folk pop with eight-piece, The Gin Club and country with the Wilson Pickers. In 2011 he released his first solo record to great acclaim titled The Cat.
BONFIRE NIGHTS make swirling moody psych-pop: a clash of surf and synth, shoe-gaze with purple haze, Virginia Plain meets Jesus & Mary Chain. With mantra like drones, shaking bones and sweet candy overtones, Bonfire Nights like to blur the boundaries. Formed by Steve, Ruth and Nicole in 2010, the band split their time between London and their hometown of Brisbane, Australia. In 2012 they showcased at SxSW and toured the USA.
HUSKY is a four piece from Melbourne, Australia. 2012 is Husky’s year winning hearts with every sold-out show around Australia in 2011, and supporting world-class acts including Devandra Banhart, Kimbra, Gotye, Laura Marling and Hall & Oates. Husky will release their debut album Forever So in Europe and North America through Sub Pop in mid 2012, the first Australian group to sign to the iconic Seattle label.
INLAND SEA The ten members of Brisbane’s Inland Sea are bound together by a love of complex harmonies and song writing. Since forming in early 2010 Inland Sea have won hearts with their luscious five-part vocal harmonies, interwoven instrumentation and lyrical sincerity. Creating a sound that soars and swells higher than the tide, their music evokes the awe, majesty, melancholy and bittersweet joy of the stormy shore.
Jackson Firebird is an explosive two piece Aussie Rock outfit spawned from the small country town of Mildura, three hours north of Melbourne. The rock duo consists of fat guitar, distorted vocals, hard hitting drums and the raw sounds of a miked-up, upside-down “bottle bin”.
JINJA SAFARI are a self-produced & recorded band based in Sydney who draw from afro-pop rhythms and tumbling island guitar to create inspired dreamy folk pop, with a melodic richness comparable to acts like Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective and Sigur Ros. They formed in 2010 and are known for their energetic live shows.
Kellie grew up playing bass in Brisbane band Screamfeeder and is out on her own playing dark guitar driven pop on her new self titled album. Lloyd plays and writes songs in alternate tunings and is inspired by PJ Harvey, Explosions in the Sky, Swerevdriver, Beach House, Kurt Vile and Mazzy Star. She will be playing shows in the UK accompanied by a drummer.
MIKE NOGA Best known for his work as the drummer for Australia’s most critically acclaimed rock band The Drones (released on UK based All Tomorrow’s Parties label). Mike Noga found a rare gap in his hectic schedule and decided to address the situation. In 2011 he released his third solo album titled The Balladeer Hunter, reminiscent of early Springsteen, 70’s Dylan, the relentless pummeling of Suicide and a whisper of Leonard Cohen. It is an album that will remain ageless.
MILLIONS are a bunch of young garage-pop marvels out of Brisbane. Barely twelve months old but brimming with enthusiasm, Millions have already shared stages with the likes of The Grates, Bluejuice, Last Dinosaurs, Bleeding Knees Club and Gold Fields.
OLIVER TANK is a 22 year old artist from Sydney. His live show is developed and engaging, it’s not just a guy on a laptop. He plays guitar, drum pads, sings and uses a sampler. There’s also a lot of interest in him in the UK, he is currently on playlist at XFM and has an XFM session locked in while in London. He’s also had over 200,000 listens on Soundcloud.
SIETTA are an electronic soul duo from Darwin, made up of producer/instrumentalist James Mangohig and vocalist Caiti Baker. That sound is ambitious electronic soul drenched in blues and hip hop, a striking record with no peer in Australian music. Welcome to Sietta’s The Seventh Passenger.
STEP-PANTHER are an irrepressible shred-rock ‘n’ garage-pop trio out of Sydney!
At home they’ve forged a fun and fast live reputation by playing shows with Yuck, Girls and Kurt Vile. Following their just-released debut album, they were recently named by NME as one of the 100 Best New Bands Of 2012.
THE BOWERS are a garage power pop four piece from Melbourne. They toured Europe in 2010 on the back of their debut vinyl release out on a Spanish label and spent the early part of 2011 recording second album Odds or Evens to critical acclaim. The Bowers have shared stages with You Am I, Urge Overkill, Los Chicos, Spencer P Jones, Even, Paul Collins and Soundtrack of Our Lives. The band is touring the UK and Europe in May.
THE KILLGIRLS are a 5-piece indie/electro band making music for party people that like getting smacked in the face and held in the heart. The Killgirls EP was recorded in their hometown of Adelaide and mastered by Mike Marsh at the Exchange in London whose working credits include The Prodigy, The Chemical Bros, The Klaxons and fellow Australians The Presets and Sneaky Sound System. More recently, Lamar Lowder at the Sound Sanctuary in Sydney has taken over recording/producing duties.
